Atletico Madrid’s ongoing squad overhaul may soon see another significant departure, as English midfielder Conor Gallagher emerges as a target for Premier League side Newcastle United.
The Spanish club began their rebuild last summer and have already confirmed five exits this transfer window. Midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is close to finalizing a move to Major League Soccer, and reports suggest Gallagher could be the next to follow him out of the Wanda Metropolitano.
Gallagher, 25, joined Atletico from Chelsea last summer in a deal worth €41 million. Despite settling well into the dressing room and earning praise from manager Diego Simeone for his attitude and work ethic, the Englishman struggled to nail down a regular starting role—starting only half of Atletico’s La Liga matches last season.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is reportedly a long-time admirer of Gallagher and has recommended the midfielder as a top target for the summer. The Magpies are now said to be “seriously considering” a bid. Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with Gallagher in recent months, though any move to Spurs would involve crossing the London divide—often a sensitive matter for players and fans alike.
While Atletico are publicly pleased with Gallagher’s contributions in his debut season, club sources acknowledge that his future may ultimately be dictated by financial strategy. With a contract running until 2029, Gallagher represents one of the most valuable assets the club can sell to help fund the next phase of their rebuild.
Although Atletico are not actively looking to offload Gallagher, they are reportedly open to selling him if a suitable offer arrives—ideally one that exceeds the €41 million they paid Chelsea just last year. As negotiations typically begin with inflated valuations, sources suggest Atletico could seek between €45 million and €50 million for a potential deal.
Gallagher’s return to England remains a real possibility, and as Atletico Madrid continue shaping their squad, the midfielder’s situation could develop rapidly in the coming weeks.
