Military deployed to Bawku SHS after student unrest over alleged exam malpractice

Military personnel have been deployed to Bawku Senior High School in the Upper East Region following a violent disturbance by students that led to the destruction of school property and the assault of a teacher.

The incident reportedly occurred at about 1:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, when some students went on a rampage and caused extensive damage to facilities on the school campus.

Confirming the development, the Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Abweko Azasoo, said the unrest was triggered after school authorities refused to allow examination malpractice involving some final-year students who are expected to complete their examinations this week.

According to him, the situation escalated into violence, during which one teacher was allegedly kidnapped by students, while another was assaulted and sustained injuries.

The injured teacher was first rushed to a nearby health facility for treatment before being referred to Bolgatanga for further medical care. The full extent of damage to school property is yet to be determined.

Authorities have not yet confirmed any arrests. Investigations are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the incident and guide further action.
