The project, initiated in 2024, forms part of the Diocese’s legacy projects to mark its 40th anniversary under the leadership of the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Dr Samuel Dua Dodd.
For several years, GHAMSU UMaT Local held its worship services at the Mt. Olivet Methodist Chapel at Camp City in the Tarkwa Circuit. However, the steady increase in student membership made the facility inadequate for the growing congregation.
The chapel, which has a seating capacity of about 150, could no longer accommodate even half of the Union’s membership, creating difficulties for worship and fellowship. The situation also contributed to some Methodist students joining other congregations.
Concerned about the challenges, the Tarkwa Diocesan leadership identified the construction of a dedicated chapel for the university’s Methodist students as a priority project during its 40th anniversary celebrations.
Construction began in 2024 and progressed to the roofing stage before the Methodist Development Fund intervened to support the roofing works through the Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, the Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu.
Since the beginning of the 2026/2027 spiritual year, GHAMSU UMaT Local has been using the new facility for its worship services.
The improved space has provided members with a more comfortable environment for worship, allowing services to take place without the previous constraints associated with limited seating and the need to make way for other members.
The development has also contributed to the growth of the Union, attracting both Methodist and non-Methodist students who previously did not belong to any church denomination.
The chapel project is expected to strengthen the Methodist Church’s presence on the university campus and provide a lasting place for worship, fellowship and the spiritual development of students.
Editorial note: The article deliberately distinguishes between the roofing works, which have received support, and the overall completion of the chapel. The information provided does not establish that the entire building has been completed.
