JoyNews reporter detained, civilian assaulted during Spintex demolition

A team of armed military personnel on Wednesday, July 30, allegedly obstructed JoyNews reporter Carlos Carlony from covering a demolition exercise near Spintex Road in Accra. During the incident, a civilian who was being interviewed by the journalist was reportedly physically assaulted by the soldiers.

At the time this report was filed, Mr. Carlony had been taken into custody by operatives from the National Security, and his mobile phone was seized.

The full details surrounding the incident remain unclear, and it is yet to be determined what led to the altercation between the security personnel and the media team.

The development has once again raised serious concerns about the safety of journalists operating in Ghana, especially when covering high-profile or sensitive events.

The demolition in question is believed to be tied to an ongoing legal dispute over land ownership between the McDan Group and the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL). Sources suggest that multiple showrooms and structures in the area were affected by the exercise.

The targeted building, located adjacent to Action Chapel on Spintex Road, was reportedly demolished around 7:00 p.m., with excavators and security forces heavily involved in the operation, according to eyewitness accounts.
