Inusah Fuseini cautions Majority against premature move to scrap OSP

Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, is urging the Majority Caucus in Parliament to rethink its push to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor, warning that the decision would be hasty and harmful to Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts.

His caution comes after renewed calls from the Majority, led by its Leader Mahama Ayariga, to dissolve the OSP and return all corruption-related prosecutions to the Attorney General and Minister for Justice. Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, December 4, Mr Ayariga questioned whether the OSP had justified its existence, arguing that the office has underperformed despite receiving more resources than the Attorney General’s Department.

He suggested that Parliament should move to wind down the institution, either through a private member’s bill or a government-led amendment.

Reacting to these developments in a media interview, Inusah Fuseini insisted that dismantling the OSP would be a setback. He argued that Ghana’s struggle against corruption is still ongoing, and eliminating a specialised institution designed to strengthen accountability would be counterproductive.

According to him, Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng should be given the necessary time, space and institutional backing to demonstrate the full capacity of the office.

Mr Fuseini stressed that the country has not yet achieved any significant victory against corruption to warrant abandoning the OSP.

He explained that corruption cases continue to be pursued across various sectors, and the need for a dedicated investigative and prosecutorial body remains critical.

He concluded that nothing fundamental has changed to justify dissolving the office, and the OSP should be supported to fulfill its mandate rather than scrapped.
