Tensions over crop theft in Atwima Trabuom, Ashanti Region, escalated into a shocking incident when a 30-year-old ginger farmer allegedly cut off the hand of a 19-year-old suspected thief. The Foase Police have since arrested the farmer in connection with the case.
According to local reports, the confrontation occurred in the early hours of Saturday around 2:00 a.m., when the teenager was caught attempting to steal ginger from the farmer’s plot. The altercation reportedly turned violent, resulting in the suspect losing his right hand.
Kwadwo Amankwa, the Unit Committee Chairman for the area, explained that residents discovered the bleeding victim in his room that morning. He added that police were immediately called, and the victim led them to the farm to identify where the incident had taken place.
Amankwa also highlighted a growing frustration among farmers over repeated thefts in the community. He noted that some plots of ginger have been entirely dug up by thieves, causing significant financial losses. The chairman warned that if authorities fail to enforce measures to prevent theft, farmers’ anger could escalate into further violent confrontations.
The case has drawn attention to the broader issue of crop theft in rural areas, particularly high-value crops like ginger. Local farmers are demanding stricter policing and protection for their livelihoods as investigations continue.
