Ghana secures additional $117.1M for basic education under expanded GALOP initiative

The Ministry of Education has announced an additional funding injection of $117.1 million under the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) and its second additional financing (AF2). The funding aims to scale up key interventions across basic schools in Ghana, with a focus on improving learning outcomes and strengthening the education system.

The new financing, secured with the support of the World Bank, the Global Partnership for Education, and other development partners, will be directed toward teacher training, school grants, and performance-based incentives. These targeted initiatives are designed to enhance teaching quality and ensure measurable progress in Ghana’s basic education sector.

The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the GALOP Project Oversight Committee on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. The meeting brought together key stakeholders, including development partners and heads of implementing agencies, to outline strategies for effective delivery and monitoring of the expanded programme.

Speaking on behalf of Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, who chairs the committee, the Ministry emphasized the importance of strategic direction and system responsiveness.

“GALOP AF2 provides an additional $117.1 million to scale up targeted interventions in basic schools. We must ensure that every intervention—from teacher training and school grants to performance-based incentives—is effectively deployed and monitored,” the Ministry’s statement read.

Hon. Haruna Iddrisu also highlighted that the committee’s success will depend on its clarity of direction, quality of oversight, and ability to respond to real-time challenges within the education landscape.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to building strong oversight mechanisms and adaptive implementation systems to guarantee that the funds result in tangible improvements in teaching and learning nationwide.
