Food and Beverages Association demands nationwide land border clampdown

the food and beverages association of ghana (fabag) is pushing for a sweeping closure of all land borders to the affected imports, arguing that the restriction introduced at the aflao crossing must be enforced across the country.

in a statement released on monday, the association praised the government of ghana and the ghana revenue authority for what it described as a decisive and well-timed move to block selected transit goods from entering through the aflao border.

fabag said the directive marks a major intervention aimed at shielding domestic manufacturers, securing state revenue and tightening regulatory supervision at ghana’s entry points.

despite applauding the action, the association cautioned that confining the enforcement to only one border post risks weakening the overall effectiveness of the policy.

it urged authorities to replicate the measure at every land border without delay, warning that traders could simply reroute the restricted goods through alternative entry points if the directive remains limited in scope.

beyond that, fabag called for the policy to go further — insisting on an outright prohibition of the specified products through land borders, whether they are intended for transit or for sale within ghana.

the group maintained that targeting only transit consignments could open fresh loopholes, encourage smuggling, enable under-declaration and distort fair competition within the local market.

according to the association, a uniform and comprehensive enforcement strategy nationwide would defend local businesses and employment, promote equitable trade conditions, curb illicit cross-border activity, boost revenue generation and reinforce border control systems.

fabag emphasized that consistent implementation at all entry points is essential to delivering the intended economic and regulatory results.

the association reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with policymakers in strengthening the trading framework and preserving the integrity of ghana’s borders, while advancing policies that drive industrial growth, safeguard revenue and enhance national economic stability.

meanwhile, in new york city, a separate travel ban temporarily paralysed the metropolis of more than eight million residents before authorities lifted the restriction at noon local time, reopening roads, highways and bridges after hours of shutdown.
