EC lacks credibility under Jean Mensa – Mustapha Gbande

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has called for a complete overhaul of the leadership at the Electoral Commission (EC), stating that the current administration lacks the credibility and competence required to manage Ghana’s democratic processes.

Speaking on Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Channel One TV on Tuesday, July 8, Gbande was particularly critical of the EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa.

He argued that under her leadership, the Commission has become entangled in controversy and public mistrust, undermining its constitutional mandate.

“We have never wanted an EC in Jean Mensa to do our bidding. We feel that she’s a misfit for that office, and she doesn’t give the level of reliability and the trust the public expects in an Electoral Commission. Her administration has been rancorous, full of controversy and a lack of trust,” Gbande asserted.

He emphasized that the core role of the Electoral Commission should be to foster confidence among all political actors and the general public, without bias or suspicion.

“It doesn’t matter whether it is the NDC or the NPP. An Electoral Commission should be trusted by the people to build consensus and inspire confidence in those who are going to cast their votes,” he added.

Gbande further claimed that many Ghanaians doubt Jean Mensa’s ability to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections, citing lingering issues from the 2020 general elections.

His comments come ahead of a parliamentary re-run in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency, where the EC has been accused by some of favoring the NDC. Gbande firmly rejected those accusations, maintaining that the NDC does not seek to influence the Commission but rather advocates for a leadership that is impartial and capable.

The NDC has consistently raised concerns about the EC’s neutrality and continues to demand electoral reforms to ensure fairness and transparency in Ghana’s electoral system.
