CAF sanctions Samuel Eto’o over touchline conduct as FECAFOOT moves to appeal

CAF has imposed a four-match ban on Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o following his conduct during Cameroon’s 2-0 defeat to host nation Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement issued after the match, CAF said its disciplinary body found Eto’o guilty of misconduct, citing his behaviour on the sidelines during the heated encounter. The former Cameroon captain was reportedly seen reacting angrily to officiating decisions, an incident that occurred in close proximity to CAF President Patrice Motsepe.

The sanction includes a $20,000 fine, a penalty CAF says reflects the seriousness of the incident amid ongoing efforts to maintain discipline and respect for match officials at the tournament.

The match itself was marked by tension, with players from both teams involved in confrontations as emotions spilled over. CAF confirmed it has opened broader investigations into violent incidents that have occurred during matches at the ongoing AFCON.

FECAFOOT has rejected the ruling, questioning both the basis and the speed of the disciplinary process. In a strongly worded response, the federation said the decision lacked clear justification and raised concerns about fairness.

According to FECAFOOT, the rapid manner in which the ban was imposed undermines the principles of due process and transparency expected in disciplinary matters at the continental level. The federation announced it will formally challenge the ruling through an appeal.

FECAFOOT also reiterated its backing for Eto’o, stressing its commitment to credible football governance and disciplinary justice, while standing firmly behind its president.

Despite the controversy, the tournament continues, with Morocco set to face Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday, as CAF seeks to conclude the competition amid heightened scrutiny over officiating and disciplinary standards.
