AMA Gives Traders at Unauthorised Bus Stops 48 Hours to Vacate

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given traders occupying unauthorised bus stops across the metropolis 48 hours to vacate the locations ahead of an intensified enforcement exercise.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, the Assembly warned that traders who fail to comply with the directive will face enforcement action, including prosecution under its by-laws.

The move follows concerns raised by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other driver unions over the growing occupation of designated bus stops by hawkers.

The unions had threatened to embark on a strike, arguing that the activities of traders obstruct the movement of vehicles and pedestrians.

According to the AMA, the practice has worsened traffic congestion and forced commuters to board and alight from vehicles at unsafe locations, exposing them to road accidents.

The Assembly said the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, had already initiated enforcement measures, including the removal of traders occupying unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District.

It further cautioned traders against returning to locations cleared during previous enforcement exercises, warning that offenders would face additional sanctions, including prosecution.

The AMA says the exercise forms part of efforts to restore order, improve road safety and ensure the proper use of public spaces across the metropolis.
