The High Court in Accra has granted bail to the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe, after he was earlier remanded into custody following his arraignment on charges of false publication.
Abronye DC appeared before the court on a bail application pending trial, moved by his counsel, former Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, who was led by former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
During proceedings, Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai informed the court that the Republic was not opposed to the bail application.
The court subsequently granted Abronye DC bail in the sum of GH¢100,000 with two sureties.
As part of the conditions set by the court, the NPP communicator is required to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) once every two weeks, surrender all travel documents, and obtain permission from the Registrar before travelling outside the jurisdiction.
Abronye’s earlier remand had triggered criticism from sections of the NPP and some legal commentators, who argued that it amounted to an infringement on his constitutional rights.
However, the presiding judge explained that the initial decision was influenced by concerns over the likelihood of the accused committing another offence if granted immediate bail.
