Methodist Church Ghana Health Directorate marks World Hypertension Day with nationwide campaign against the silent killer

The Health Directorate of the Methodist Church Ghana joined the global health community on May 17, 2026, to commemorate World Hypertension Day with a renewed call for public awareness, regular blood pressure screening, and healthier living.

Observed under the global theme, Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer, the commemoration highlighted the Church’s commitment to safeguarding both the spiritual and physical well being of its members and the wider Ghanaian society.

Describing hypertension as a dangerous silent killer, the Health Directorate noted that many people continue to live with high blood pressure unknowingly until life threatening complications such as stroke, heart disease, and kidney failure emerge.

As part of the observance, the Directorate encouraged all Diocesan, Circuit, and Society Health Coordinators to mobilise their health teams to embark on educational campaigns, organize screening exercises, and promote healthy lifestyles within Methodist societies and surrounding communities.

According to the Directorate, churches must become centres of healing and awareness by equipping people with knowledge about prevention and early detection.

Particular attention was given to promoting the DASH diet, a nutrition plan centred on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and reduced salt intake, alongside regular exercise and routine medical check ups.

The commemoration also emphasised the importance of empowering individuals to know their numbers through regular blood pressure checks and consistent healthy living practices.

Health experts worldwide continue to identify hypertension as one of the leading causes of stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and premature death, especially in low and middle income countries where routine screening remains inadequate.

Through this year’s World Hypertension Day activities, The Methodist Church Ghana Health Directorate hopes to deepen awareness, strengthen preventive healthcare efforts, and inspire communities to work together in defeating hypertension.
