Don’t belittle everyone’s intelligence: Presiding Bishop slams Felix Kwakye Ofosu over LGBTQ+ comment

The Presiding Bishop of The Methodist Church Ghana, The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Asamoah-Gyadu, has raised questions over comments made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communication, regarding LGBTQ+ rights.

According to a report by Joy FM, the minister said that “issues relating to LGBTQ+ rights are not a major priority for Ghanaians, stressing that the government remains focused on key socio-economic concerns.”

Responding in a post on his official Facebook profile, The Presiding Bishop challenged the statement, asking: “Really? So which Ghanaian is this minister referring to here? In any case, did we miss a poll on this matter?”

He added that if the government’s position on the issue has changed, it should be communicated openly. “If you have softened your stance on the issue, just tell us. Don’t belittle everyone’s intelligence. Please, be serious!”

The Presiding Bishop said that while economic and social development concerns are important, human rights and social inclusion also require attention from government leaders. He said public officials have a responsibility to communicate clearly and responsibly, particularly on issues that affect public trust and generate debate.

He warned that dismissive or ambiguous statements risk creating confusion about government priorities and could undermine confidence in public institutions.

The Presiding Bishop’s intervention comes amid ongoing national discussions on LGBTQ+ rights and government focus in Ghana. By calling for clarity and honesty, he is urging public officials to engage citizens in a manner that is transparent, respectful, and accountable.
