Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, has stressed the urgent need to reinforce strict discipline and regimentation within the Ghana Armed Forces, noting that doing so is critical to boosting efficiency and effectively confronting emerging security challenges.
Addressing participants at the opening of the General Headquarters Retreat 2026 in Accra on Monday, March 23, Lt Gen Agyapong stressed that discipline, respect for the chain of command, and adherence to established standards remain the foundation of a professional military.
He cautioned that the current global and regional security landscape is increasingly complex, marked by challenges such as hybrid warfare, violent extremism, cyber threats, disinformation, and organised transnational crime. In his view, these evolving threats demand a force that is both adaptable and firmly rooted in discipline.
“These evolving threats require the Ghana Armed Forces to remain proactive, disciplined and forward-looking to maintain operational relevance and effectiveness,” he said.
The four-day retreat, running from March 23 to 26, is being held in phases at Burma Camp in Accra and Mampong-Akuapem. It is aimed at repositioning the Armed Forces through a renewed emphasis on regimentation, unity, and resilience.
Lt Gen Agyapong also highlighted the need for stronger coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force, noting that joint planning and collaboration are critical to mission success.
He further urged enhanced cooperation between the military and other state institutions to build a more integrated national security framework, while encouraging officers to embrace innovation and technology to better respond to future challenges.
