Police in Bawku threaten exit amid escalating insecurity

The Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has revealed that a number of police officers stationed in the troubled Bawku area are considering stepping down unless they are reassigned.

He explained that the deteriorating security climate has turned deployments in the enclave into high-risk assignments, noting that several officers manning checkpoints have been attacked and killed within the last three months as tensions persist.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 10, the Minister urged lawmakers representing affected areas to strengthen cooperation with security agencies to help restore order and improve safety for personnel.

Muntaka stressed that pulling officers out is not the solution, insisting instead on reinforcing their presence with armoured vehicles and better protection. He called on MPs to partner with security services to create conditions that will allow them to operate effectively.

His comments underscore the growing danger confronting security forces in Bawku, where recurring violence continues to threaten both officers and residents, while increasing pressure on authorities to work with local leaders to bring lasting peace to the area.
