Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta declines assistance from Ghana following US detention

The Embassy of Ghana in Washington, DC, has confirmed that Ghana’s former Minister for Finance, Mr Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori Atta, has declined consular assistance following his detention by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In a statement issued on January 10, 2026, the Embassy said it received information regarding Mr Ofori Atta’s detention and immediately undertook the necessary steps to verify the circumstances surrounding the matter.

After confirmation, the Embassy formally contacted the relevant detention facility to request access to the former Finance Minister in order to provide consular assistance in line with established diplomatic and international protocols.

However, officials at the facility informed the Embassy that Mr Ofori Atta declined to engage with Ghanaian consular representatives at that time, stating his preference to do so only in the presence of his legal counsel.

The Embassy further indicated that it remains in continuous contact with the appropriate United States authorities and will continue to follow developments closely to ensure that Mr Ofori Atta’s rights are fully respected throughout the process.

The statement, addressed to all media houses, was signed by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Mr Victor Emmanuel Smith.
