Legal and environmental policy analyst Dr Manasseh Mintah has argued that President John Mahama’s potential approval of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill would represent a decisive assertion of African independence and cultural sovereignty.
Dr. Mintah further explained that the President’s expected position is consistent with his long-standing belief that African nations must chart their own course without undue external pressure, especially from Western governments. He noted that Mahama has repeatedly maintained that the continent “has come of age” and must be empowered to make decisions grounded in its values, identity, and collective vision.
According to Dr Mintah, assenting to the bill would deliver a strong signal to foreign actors who attempt to influence domestic policy, reinforcing the principle that Ghana is capable of managing its internal affairs.
He linked the matter to what he described as an “egalitarian African philosophy” — a framework centred on dignity, self-determination, and cultural authenticity. In his view, the President’s endorsement of the bill would be a continuation of that philosophy, reflecting Ghana’s right to uphold its social norms without fearing external repercussions.
Dr Mintah also suggested that Ghana’s recent economic gains have boosted the government’s confidence as it navigates sensitive national issues. “The economy has just had a turnover,” he said, implying that the country now feels more able to assert its autonomy instead of relying heavily on Western economic support.
He further urged the public to view the broader context of the debate, emphasizing that the conversation should not be reduced solely to the specifics of the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Rather, he framed it as part of an ongoing struggle for cultural preservation and a rejection of foreign impositions.
“What you want to impose on us is alien to us… our culture, our values, our orientation are different from yours,” he stated, arguing that the bill should be understood through the lens of decolonisation and collective identity.
