Otto Addo keeps focus on victory, not records, as Ghana near World Cup spot

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo says his focus remains on securing victory for Ghana rather than chasing personal glory as he edges closer to making history with the national team.

Ghana could book an early ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a win over the Central African Republic on Wednesday, October 8. If successful, Addo would become the first coach to guide Ghana to two World Cup tournaments, having previously led the Black Stars to the 2022 edition in Qatar.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, the coach downplayed individual accolades, emphasizing that his attention is solely on the task at hand.

“I don’t live too much in the past. We have to think about tomorrow — we have to win this game, and then we’ll see,” Addo said. “In a normal scenario, we still need to win the second game or at least draw. We have to take it game by game. It’s not about me; it’s about the team and winning this match.”

The Black Stars will host Central African Republic at the Accra Sports Stadium, before wrapping up their qualifying campaign against Comoros on Sunday. A victory on Wednesday would seal Ghana’s qualification with a match to spare.
