The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Dr. Kingsley Agyemang, has stepped in to support a 13-year-old girl who became pregnant after a gang rape and was later abandoned by her parents.
The girl, identified as Nafisatu Adwoa, shared her ordeal on Oyerepa Afutuo, a television programme that highlights the struggles of vulnerable people. She revealed that she had been left homeless and without medical care throughout her pregnancy, surviving for months without antenatal services, proper nutrition, or even basic necessities.
According to police reports, Nafisatu became pregnant after being raped by five teenagers in her community near Boamang in the Ashanti Region. Two of the suspects have so far been arrested, while investigations continue to apprehend the remaining perpetrators.
After her story aired, Dr. Agyemang acted swiftly. He arranged for Nafisatu to be admitted to the South Suntreso Hospital in Kumasi, pledging to cover all medical bills until she safely delivers. He also provided her with personal supplies, food, and other essentials she had been deprived of.
Beyond immediate care, the MP has partnered with the Department of Social Welfare to ensure long-term support, including counselling, post-delivery care, and opportunities for either education or vocational training to secure a future for the teenager and her child.
Dr. Agyemang stressed the responsibility of leadership in such cases, saying:
“We must not stand idle while children suffer neglect in such vulnerable circumstances. Protecting and restoring dignity to the most vulnerable is our duty as leaders and as human beings.”
Community members and child rights advocates have praised his swift response, describing it as a rare show of leadership anchored in empathy. They also urged authorities to ensure justice for the survivor by bringing all perpetrators to account.
What began as a story of pain and rejection is now being reshaped into one of hope, as the MP’s intervention provides Nafisatu with safety, medical care, and the promise of a brighter future.
