The Ghana Publishing Company Limited has renewed public awareness about the critical role the Ghana Gazette plays in formalizing legal documents and official processes in the country.
Speaking on Sore Na Hyeren on July 17, 2025, Marketing Officer Dennis Quaye clarified that the Ghana Publishing Company is the only legally mandated institution authorized to publish the Ghana Gazette, Acts of Parliament, Legislative Instruments, Local Government Bulletins, and other government publications.
He emphasized that the Ghana Gazette is not just a routine bulletin, but a legally binding publication central to processes such as name changes, statutory declarations, and public notifications.
Explaining the procedure, Mr. Quaye noted that individuals wishing to gazette a name change must first obtain an affidavit from a Commissioner of Oaths, followed by a statutory declaration that outlines the intended corrections or amendments. The completed documentation is then submitted for publication in the Ghana Gazette to give it legal force.
He added that the Gazette also plays a key role in marital documentation. For instance, when a woman opts to adopt her husband’s surname after marriage, the name change must be published in the Gazette to be legally recognized.
Public Relations Officer Ruth Awuku Appau elaborated on the legal requirements surrounding marriage, stating that for a marriage to be recognized under Ghanaian law, both the venue of solemnization and the officiating minister must be officially gazetted. Failure to comply with this legal stipulation, she warned, may render the marriage invalid, potentially complicating issues such as property distribution in the case of separation or divorce.
Ms. Appau praised the Methodist Church Ghana for complying with this requirement by ensuring all its ministers and places of worship used for marriage ceremonies are duly gazetted, in accordance with Section 40(2) of the Marriages Act, Cap 127.
The Ghana Publishing Company’s “Gazette 360” campaign seeks to deepen public understanding of the legal significance of the Gazette and to encourage institutions and individuals to ensure their actions and documents are officially recognized through proper gazettal.
