The Association of Methodist Chiefs and Queen Mothers is commemorating its first anniversary with a three-day conference hosted by the Northern Accra Diocese from July 17 to 20, 2025.
The association, inaugurated in 2024 by the Presiding Bishop, Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, was established to bring together traditional leaders who share a common Methodist faith, creating a space for spiritual growth, fellowship, and collaboration.
Speaking on WTV Morning Show Sore Na Hyeren on July 16, the Chaplain of the Association, Very Rev. De-Graft Seme Obiri, emphasized the spiritual role of the group. He stated that his mandate is to nurture the spiritual lives of the chiefs and queen mothers and help deepen their walk with God.
He reflected on the historic presence of traditional rulers in the Methodist Church, citing notable examples such as Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman, Rev. I. J. Ghartey, and several past Presiding Bishops who had strong ties with traditional authority.
Nana Ama Adoma Kyerekuaa I, Secretary of the Association, stressed that holding a chieftaincy or queen mother title should not be seen as incompatible with Christianity.
She affirmed that faith and tradition can coexist, and highlighted the Association’s presence across 14 dioceses in Ghana. She called on all Methodist chiefs and queen mothers who have not yet joined the Association to do so, encouraging them to balance their traditional duties with their Christian commitment.
Financial Secretary Leni Capt. Nii Kojo Nseni Mankattah IV also addressed perceptions that chiefs and queen mothers rarely attend church. He clarified that many of them were active Christians even before ascending to their traditional roles, and they have continued to serve God faithfully while contributing to the church’s growth.
The Association has played a vital role in securing land for church buildings, schools, and other Methodist projects, according to the Chaplain. These efforts reflect the Association’s broader goal of supporting both the spiritual and developmental mission of the church.
As the Association celebrates its first anniversary, its leaders remain committed to promoting Christian values among traditional rulers, strengthening the church’s outreach, and supporting national development through faith-driven leadership.
