General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, has raised serious concerns over the impartiality of key state institutions, accusing the Electoral Commission (EC) and the Ghana Police Service of acting under political influence in the ongoing Ablekuma North parliamentary election controversy.
Speaking on PM Express on JoyNews on Tuesday, July 8, Kodua questioned the neutrality of the two institutions, stating that their conduct is undermining Ghana’s democratic process.
“So that is why it’s important that our institutions are supposed to be impartial. That’s why it’s important our institutions are supposed to be professional,” he stressed.
Kodua alleged that the police failed to provide adequate security during the collation of results from three outstanding polling stations. When asked if the previous NPP government should take responsibility, he fired back, suggesting the police might now be compromised under the current NDC-led administration.
“So are you trying to tell me that the reason why the police failed to provide security… was because they were working under the behest of this government (NDC)?” he asked.
He also challenged the EC’s reasoning for halting the collation process, implying the Commission was using security concerns as an excuse to delay or alter the outcome.
Kodua referenced a January 4, 2025 court order directing the EC to collate and declare results, not to conduct a rerun. “The court never said, go and do a rerun,” he emphasized.
When pressed on why the NPP had not taken further legal action, he confirmed that the party had filed a contempt application against the EC.
“That is why we are in court… and the EC has been cited for contempt,” he said, insisting that the Commission has no authority to vary a court directive without returning to court.
He warned that the EC’s unilateral decision to organize a rerun could set a damaging precedent for Ghana’s electoral process.
