Students warn NPP Delegates Conference could spread COVID on campus

A group of final-year students at the University of Ghana is planning to petition the University’s Sports Directorate to stop the New Patriotic Party (NPP) from using the school’s Sports Stadium for its upcoming National Annual Delegates Conference scheduled for July 17 to 19, 2025.

The level 400 students have expressed concerns over a possible spike in COVID-19 cases if the event goes ahead, fearing that the large number of attendees from across the country could worsen the outbreak and endanger both the campus and the wider community.

They argue that hosting the event directly contradicts health protocols issued by the University of Ghana Health Services Directorate.

On June 23, the Health Directorate reported a resurgence of COVID-19 cases on campus and in nearby areas, urging strict adherence to safety measures. Following this, on June 25, the Dean of Students suspended all social gatherings on campus, affecting student-led activities such as those by the SRC and GRASAG.

The SRC further supported the directive in a June 28 notice, encouraging students to comply with the new measures.

In Parliament on July 1, the Minister of Health disclosed that 107 people had tested positive for COVID-19 out of 316 suspected cases within the university community. He assured the public that the outbreak had not yet spread beyond the campus.

Despite these assurances, the concerned students insist that allowing the NPP conference could turn the stadium into a super-spreader venue and jeopardize national health efforts.

They are urging the Sports Directorate, university authorities, and the government to intervene and engage the NPP leadership to cancel or relocate the event in order to prevent a possible nationwide health crisis.
