Violence at Asanko Mine: Assembly Member, civilian shot dead by soldiers

Two people, including the Assembly Member for Aboabo Tetekaaso Electoral Area, Sampson Danquah, have been shot dead by soldiers guarding the Asanko mine concession in Mpatoam, Amansie West District, following a violent clash with community members. Two others sustained gunshot injuries.

Reports indicate the first victim was killed after being found on the mine’s concession. Tensions escalated as residents, angered by the killing, blocked a major road, leading to a confrontation with soldiers. The Assembly Member, who attempted to calm the situation, was fatally struck by a bullet.

The incident has intensified concerns over repeated allegations of harassment and intimidation by security personnel at the mine, creating growing mistrust between the company and its host communities.

In response, MP for Manso Nkwanta, Tweneboa Kodua Fokuo, has demanded an independent public inquiry into the conduct of the military officers and the role of Asanko Mines in the violence. He called for disciplinary action, a review of the use of armed soldiers in commercial spaces, compensation for victims’ families, and psychosocial support for the community.
