UK envoy, gender minister deepen partnership talks

The Christian Rogg, UK High Commissioner to Ghana, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, to explore ways of strengthening collaboration on gender equality, women’s economic empowerment, and inclusive development.

The meeting created an avenue for both sides to align priorities and outline strategies to deepen cooperation between the UK and the Ministry.

During the discussions, Dr. Lartey revealed that a Legislative Instrument has been laid before Parliament to operationalise the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, a move expected to enhance coordination among institutions and improve service delivery within the sector.

She also highlighted ongoing reforms under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, indicating that a nationwide reassessment is underway to expand coverage from 350,000 to 400,000 households. According to her, efforts are also in progress to support beneficiaries transitioning out of LEAP with sustainable livelihoods, including opportunities under the Adwumawura Programme.

The Minister stressed the importance of strengthening social protection systems through better integration, improved data sharing, and mechanisms that can respond effectively to emergencies and economic shocks.

Talks also centred on advancing women’s economic empowerment, with a focus on skills development, access to finance, and support for entrepreneurship. Menstrual hygiene management and the local production of sanitary pads were identified as key areas to boost confidence among girls while creating business opportunities for women.

H.E. Rogg commended Dr. Lartey’s leadership and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the Ministry through both technical expertise and financial assistance, particularly in programmes aimed at empowering young women and increasing their participation in economic and public life.
