Two fire outbreaks within 24 hours leave Accra on high alert

Accra witnessed two major fire incidents within a span of 24 hours, raising fresh concerns about urban fire safety.

In the early hours of Monday, August 4, a fire broke out at the Accra Tourist Information Centre, located directly opposite Afrikiki in the city centre. The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly and is currently working to bring the blaze under control.

Though the cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, eyewitnesses suggest it may have started from the kitchen area of Rockz Waakye, a popular food vendor operating within the premises. Thankfully, no injuries or casualties have been reported.

In a separate but related incident on Sunday, more than 50 wooden structures and metal containers were destroyed in a fire outbreak at Madina Ritz Junction, displacing several residents.

That fire is believed to have started at a local washing bay situated within the slum area. Fire personnel from the Madina Fire Station intervened swiftly, managing to contain the flames and prevent further damage.

Authorities have launched investigations into both incidents to determine their exact causes.
