Three illegal miners confirmed dead in Prestea utnnel tragedy

Heath Goldfields Ltd. has formally confirmed that three unlicensed miners lost their lives after entering an inactive section of its Prestea concession in the Western Region. The individuals were reported to have gained access through unauthorised underground routes leading to restricted zones of the abandoned mine.

The incident comes at a time when widespread speculation within the Bogoso-Prestea enclave suggests that the number of trapped miners could be higher, with some residents claiming as many as 11 people may have been involved in the failed illegal entry. Parts of the abandoned underground facility reportedly collapsed over the weekend, fuelling concerns about additional casualties.

In a statement released on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Heath Goldfields Ltd. expressed profound regret over the tragedy and extended sympathy to the affected families and the local community.

“Every loss of life, regardless of circumstance, is painful, and we stand with the affected families in grief and sympathy,” the statement noted.

According to the company, it is closely collaborating with the Ghana Police Service, the Minerals Commission, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) as investigations continue and recovery operations proceed. It praised the rapid and coordinated response of the emergency teams working at the site.

The concession in question was previously under the management of FGR until its mining licence was revoked in February 2024. Although the area has since remained inactive, illegal miners are believed to have entered the underground tunnels through restricted entries. Some locals have claimed the miners might have suffocated after thick smoke—suspected to be the result of a blast—filled the shaft.

Heath Goldfields reiterated its dedication to maintaining high safety and security standards across all its operations.

“As a responsible mining company, Heath Goldfields Ltd. remains committed to the highest standards of safety… We continue to implement stringent security and safety protocols across all our concessions,” the statement added.

The firm assured stakeholders, including community leaders, regulatory bodies, and residents, that it will continue to uphold responsible mining practices. Its community relations team is currently engaging with local authorities to support families affected by the incident and provide timely updates as investigations unfold.
