The Presiding Bishop Asamoah-Gyadu calls on Methodists to embrace evangelism at 190th anniversary climax

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Johnson Asamoah Gyedu, delivered a stirring keynote address at the grand climax of the Church’s 190th Anniversary celebrations, urging members to rekindle the passion for evangelism that defined the ministry of John Wesley, founder of Methodism.

In his message, the Presiding Bishop described John Wesley as “a man of the Word”, explaining that his life was deeply anchored in Scripture and expressed powerfully through hymns. He reminded the congregation that Methodism’s heritage was built not only on sermons but also on the transformative use of music and hymns to bring hearts closer to Christ.

“The legacy of John Wesley was not only in his sermons, but in the way he used music and hymns to bring hearts to Christ. We too must embrace that same calling,” he declared, drawing a thunderous response from the congregation.

The Bishop emphasized that the church’s mission must go beyond ritual observances and traditions, calling on members to actively engage in soul-winning through preaching, hymns, and intentional outreach. He further encouraged the faithful to live lives that project the good name of Methodism — through acts of kindness, discipline, and service to humanity.

The anniversary climax, which brought together clergy, laity, and congregants from across the nation, was not only a celebration of nearly two centuries of Methodist heritage in Ghana but also a renewed call to action. It marked a moment of thanksgiving for God’s faithfulness and a reminder of the church’s enduring responsibility to spread the Gospel with zeal.

The Presiding Bishop’s address served as both a reflection on the past and a challenge for the future — urging Methodists everywhere to embody the principles of holiness, service, and evangelism that remain at the heart of Wesley’s vision.

The celebration concluded with a spirit of joy and recommitment, as the church looked ahead with determination to continue its mission of faith, service, and transformation in Ghana and beyond.
