Terror violence intensifies in Nigeria as Obi condemns mass killings in Niger

Barely 48 hours after terrorists killed more than 40 people in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas of Niger State, suspected terrorists have launched fresh attacks in parts of Kwara and Niger States, heightening fears and forcing residents to flee their homes.

In the early hours of Monday, armed men ambushed travellers along the Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran road in Kwara State, kidnapping at least four passengers. The highway, a major route linking Kwara South to the state capital, Ilorin, was reportedly blocked as attackers forced vehicles to stop and abducted victims to unknown locations. As of press time, the Kwara State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the incident.

The renewed violence coincided with another attack on a police border patrol outpost at New Kalli village in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State. The assailants reportedly set the facility ablaze and destroyed officers’ belongings and farm produce. Although no casualties were recorded, the attack has intensified fear among residents. Niger State Police confirmed the incident, stating that officers repelled the attackers after a gun battle and reinforcements had been deployed.

Meanwhile, residents of several communities in Agwara and Borgu LGAs are fleeing their ancestral homes following rumours of further planned attacks. Church leaders and villagers cited the absence of sustained security presence as a major concern, warning of possible mass displacement if urgent action is not taken.

Reacting to the killings, former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, condemned what he described as the growing normalisation of mass killings in Nigeria. He urged the federal government to prioritise the protection of lives, stressing that persistent insecurity represents a national failure.

Similarly, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, described the attacks as barbaric and inhuman, assuring residents of Niger State of the government’s commitment to ending terrorism and restoring peace.

The latest incidents underscore rising insecurity in the North-Central region, as calls intensify for decisive and coordinated security action.
