Ghanaian lawyer and statesman Sam Okudzeto has urged Christian leaders to return to Biblical truth and resist the growing influence of prosperity preaching and political partisanship in the church.
Speaking at the 2025 National Pastors and Christian Leaders Conference at Ridge Church in Accra, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Challenge Enterprises of Ghana said many preachers were misleading congregations by equating prosperity with money.
“Prosperity and money are not the same thing,” he said. “There is no direct correlation between prosperity and money.”
Mr Okudzeto warned that the narrow focus on financial gain was distorting the Christian message, adding that prosperity, in its Biblical sense, also includes peace, health and spiritual growth.
The veteran lawyer urged churches to promote unity rather than division, cautioning ministers against using the pulpit to fuel hostility. “The church must be a sanctuary of peace, not a battlefield of strife,” he told the gathering.
He also criticized the practice of discouraging church members from reading the Bible on their own. “Do not tell your members not to read the Word of God. Guide them to study it, because it is the only anchor of truth in today’s world.”
Sam Okudzeto further cautioned against the politicization of the church, warning that partisan influence was undermining Ghana’s social cohesion. “Politics has killed Ghana completely,” he said. “We must put politics aside and preach togetherness.”
His remarks come at a time when Ghana’s religious institutions face growing public scrutiny over commercialized prophecy, miracle claims and the promotion of wealth-centred preaching. Analysts say his call reflects broader concerns about the credibility of the church and its role in shaping society.
By urging ministers to uphold peace, unity and biblical integrity, Mr Okudzeto’s message was widely described as both a rebuke and a challenge to the Ghanaian church to reclaim its moral authority.
