Senyo Hosi warns against trading Ghana’s future for short-term economic gains

Convenor of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has cautioned against sacrificing the nation’s environmental health for temporary economic relief, warning that such a move would have devastating consequences for generations to come.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Tuesday, August 12, Hosi described illegal mining (galamsey) as an environmental crime that must be confronted with urgency and without compromise.

“There’s always the temptation to want to balance it with the economic needs of the time. We need to hold the cedi, agree, but we cannot do that by jeopardising the future of our children and their children. We are destroying the meaning of life. Water is life,” he stressed.

Hosi argued that while mining has a place in Ghana’s economy, it must be conducted legally and responsibly—without destroying water bodies, forest reserves, and human capital.

He also linked his call for action to the recent military helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom district, which claimed the lives of two cabinet ministers and six others, an incident President John Mahama has vowed to investigate thoroughly.

“We’ve deployed soldiers, we’ve deployed policemen, and today eight families are grieving. If we let this pass by and not let it count, that will be a huge block on our conscience as a people,” he said.

Hosi revealed that he narrowly escaped being on the ill-fated flight, noting that his colleagues Daryl Bosu of A Rocha Ghana and Dr. Ken Ashigbey were on board while he was out of town.

He urged Ghanaians to ensure the fight against illegal mining becomes a non-negotiable national priority—for the sake of the environment, public health, and the nation’s long-term survival.
