Rwanda has taken a cue from Ghana’s successful national biometric identification initiative with the launch of its own “Rwandacard” — a nationwide biometric identity system for citizens and residents.
Ghana is among a handful of countries globally to have fully implemented a national digital identification system, serving as a foundational document for multiple identification purposes.
Rwanda’s National Identification Agency (NIDA) has begun a nationwide registration exercise, with biometric data capture set to start in September, according to NIDA Director-General Josephine Mukesha. The new national digital ID is scheduled for rollout in 2026.
Reports indicate strong public interest, with many Rwandans already registering for the biometric card.
Similar to the Ghana Card, the Rwandacard will provide secure biometric digital identities to all Rwandan citizens, refugees, and foreign residents, enabling easier access to both public and private sector services.
