Real Madrid takes UEFA to court over Super League dispute

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez used the club’s General Assembly on Sunday to address the ongoing dispute surrounding the European Super League, revealing that the club has officially taken legal action against UEFA.

His comments, reported by Diario AS, offered a firm defence of the project and a sharp criticism of UEFA’s handling of the issue.

Perez reiterated that the Super League remains crucial in preventing the financial gap between English clubs and the rest of Europe from becoming “impossible to close.” He insisted that UEFA has operated under a monopoly for more than 60 years, and that Real Madrid’s pushback has already exposed major flaws in the governing body’s conduct.

He pointed to decisions dating back to 2021, when UEFA threatened Super League clubs with expulsion and opened disciplinary proceedings aimed at removing Real Madrid from the Champions League. According to Perez, the courts have since dismantled UEFA’s position.

He explained that the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) and Madrid courts delivered what he described as “devastating rulings” against UEFA. Despite this, he believes UEFA and La Liga continue to downplay the significance of the legal outcomes.

Perez stressed that UEFA “cannot sanction us for defending our future,” adding that Real Madrid is now seeking compensation for the damages caused by UEFA’s actions. He confirmed that the club has formally initiated proceedings with the goal of not only receiving financial redress but also securing the right to organise future competitions under fairer conditions.

He also criticised UEFA for encouraging clubs to join the European Clubs Association (ECA), pointing out that membership would require teams to drop any legal claims against UEFA—something he described as abandoning “billions of euros” that Real Madrid intends to pursue.

Perez closed his remarks confidently, saying: “We have won the legal battle, and we will win the next battles. It is the best project for all clubs, and they all admit it privately.”

If Real Madrid succeeds in its case, the club could reportedly receive up to €4.7 billion in damages, though the process is expected to continue for some time.
