Presiding Bishop urges SUWMA to remain rooted in Christ at Biennial Connexional Delegates Conference in Koforidua

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Asamoah-Gyadu, has called on members of the Susanna Wesley Mission Auxiliary (SUWMA) to remain deeply rooted in Christ as they continue to grow into one of the youngest yet most impactful organizations within the Church.

Addressing delegates at the 12th Biennial and 2nd Connexional SUWMA Conference in Koforidua, the Presiding Bishop commended the leadership and members for organizing a gathering that not only celebrated their achievements but also showcased their ongoing contribution to the Church’s mission. Despite its relatively short history, he noted, SUWMA has already left a remarkable imprint on the Methodist community through its dedication and service.

“It took several conferences and years of determination for SUWMA to be recognized as a full organization of the Church,” Most Rev. Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu reminded delegates. “You were born out of pain and pain but that struggle has given rise to an auxiliary that is now vibrant and transformative in the life of the Methodist Church Ghana.”

He expressed appreciation to SUWMA for extending an invitation to him and other ministers of the Gospel, describing their presence as both a privilege and a responsibility to encourage the body of Christ. He also praised the members for their perseverance and visible devotion to God’s work, which he said continues to inspire other groups across the Connexion.

The Presiding Bishop, however, cautioned SUWMA not to lose sight of its spiritual mandate. He warned against the temptation to function as a social club rather than as a movement of disciples of Jesus Christ. “Everything we do as a Church has its value,” he said, “but we must never forget to stay close to the Lord. The Church of Jesus Christ is not a social gathering; it is a body of disciples committed to living out His message of love, truth, and holiness. My prayer is that this conference will not just be another meeting on the calendar, but a true moment of transformation for every member gathered here.”

He urged delegates to allow the experiences from the conference to inspire them to carry God’s love into their families, communities, and workplaces, becoming visible examples of Christian witness. According to him, conferences of this nature should not be viewed as ends in themselves but as opportunities to renew commitment to God’s work and sharpen spiritual discernment in a world of competing values.

Reflecting on SUWMA’s journey, the Presiding Bishop acknowledged the Auxiliary’s resilience, recalling the challenges it faced before gaining recognition as an official body of the Church. Today, he observed, the group has become one of the key organizations contributing to spiritual renewal, leadership development, and community outreach within the Methodist Church Ghana.

His address was received not only as encouragement but also as a challenge to go beyond routine programs and embrace the deeper mission of reflecting Christ in everyday life.
