Poor pitch cost Ghana victory against Chad – Otto Addo

Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has cited poor pitch conditions in N’Djamena as the reason Ghana failed to secure victory against Chad in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday, September 4.

Ghana went ahead in the first half through captain Jordan Ayew, but a late strike from Célestin Ecua denied them all three points.

Victory would have stretched Ghana’s lead in Group I to six points, but the 1-1 draw left their advantage at four—later cut to three after Madagascar’s 2-0 win over the Central African Republic in a later fixture.

“The pitch was very slow for us. It makes it difficult to outplay the defenders,” Addo explained after the game. “They need to put water on it. The pitch was hard and we couldn’t play fast. It was a disadvantage for us.”

Despite the setback, Ghana remain top of Group I with 16 points, followed by Madagascar on 13, while Mali and Comoros both trail on 12 points in what has become a tightly contested group.

The Black Stars will next host Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, September 8.
