Over 6,000 voters decide outcome in tense Ablekuma North rerun

More than 6,000 registered voters are casting their ballots today, Friday, July 11, 2025, in a closely watched parliamentary rerun in Ghana’s Ablekuma North Constituency. The rerun is taking place across 19 polling stations, marking a critical step toward resolving an eight-month-long political impasse that has left the constituency without parliamentary representation.

The rerun follows intense legal and political wrangling between the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), stemming from disputed results in the December 7, 2024, general elections. Of the 62 polling stations in the constituency, only 59 were successfully collated by the Electoral Commission (EC), with the remaining three becoming the subject of legal contention.

Though the High Court in January ordered the EC to complete collation and declare results, the Commission later cited irregularities and missing signatures across 19 polling stations, prompting a full rerun instead. That decision triggered further controversy, with the NPP filing an injunction to block the rerun, claiming their candidate, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, had already secured victory by a margin of 414 votes.

The injunction was dismissed on July 9, with the court describing the suit as “unmeritorious.” Despite the NPP’s official boycott of the rerun, Owusu Afriyie has chosen to contest, declaring her readiness in a press statement on July 10. Her campaign has since received the backing of local party executives, former MPs, and grassroots supporters.

The NDC, on the other hand, remains confident that its candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, won the original election and is now poised for victory in the rerun. The party has mobilized heavily on the ground, emphasizing a message of change and representation for the people of Ablekuma North.

“The people of Ablekuma North are ready for change, and Ewurabena Aubynn represents that change,” said Joshua Alabi, Greater Accra Regional Director of Elections, during the party’s final rally.

The Electoral Commission has pledged a credible and transparent process. Deputy EC Chair Dr. Bossman Asare assured the public that all necessary security and logistical arrangements have been made to ensure a smooth and peaceful election.

Security has been heightened across all 19 polling stations, with police and election monitors deployed to prevent disruptions and maintain order.

Beyond determining who represents Ablekuma North in Parliament, the outcome of today’s vote carries wider implications. A win for the NDC would mark a major political breakthrough in an area considered an NPP stronghold. A victory for Akua Afriyie would not only reinforce her personal appeal but also signal internal rifts within her party’s national leadership.

As ballots are cast and counting begins, political observers across the country are closely watching Ablekuma North—aware that today’s result could shape the national conversation in the months ahead.
