MP’s pays tribute to Daddy Lumba, calls for national recognition

On Monday, July 28, 2025, Parliament honoured the life and legacy of legendary Ghanaian highlife musician Charles Kwadwo Fosu, widely known as Daddy Lumba, following his passing over the weekend at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness.

In a heartfelt tribute shared via Parliament’s official Facebook page, several Members of Parliament rose to celebrate the icon’s immeasurable contribution to Ghana’s cultural and musical heritage.

“A True Maestro Whose Influence Transcended Generations”

Leading the tributes was Akwasi Konadu, MP for Manhyia North, who described Daddy Lumba as “one of Ghana’s greatest musical legends, a true maestro and an icon whose influence transcended generations and national borders.”

He praised Lumba’s rich discography, noting that his songs were more than entertainment — they were “carefully crafted experiences that touched hearts and stirred consciences.”

Konadu credited Lumba with raising the standard of Ghanaian music, with timeless melodies and socially reflective lyrics that earned him fans across the continent and beyond.

Call for State Recognition and Legacy Preservation

Also speaking in the chamber was Adelaide Ntim, MP for Nsuta-Kwamang-Beposo, who called for formal national recognition of the late musician. She appealed to the government to consider:

  • Conferment of a national honour on Daddy Lumba
  • A state-assisted funeral befitting his stature
  • The establishment of initiatives to preserve and promote his musical legacy

“Let us remember Charles Kwadwo Fosu not just with tears, but with pride, for the gift he was to our nation,” she said.

A Legacy Etched in Melody

With a career spanning more than three decades, Daddy Lumba became a household name in Ghana and among Ghanaians abroad. His music — spanning highlife, gospel, and contemporary sounds — earned him a loyal fan base and critical acclaim.

He is remembered for his unmatched artistry, lyrical depth, and bold storytelling that often mirrored the socio-economic realities of Ghanaian life.

As tributes pour in from across the nation and beyond, calls for institutional support to protect and promote his musical archive continue to grow. Parliament’s tribute reflects a rising sentiment: that the nation must not let his legacy fade.
