The Immediate Past Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, The Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Kweku Asante, has called on newly elected Lay Chairmen of the Church to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, cooperation, and mutual understanding between the laity and the clergy.
He made the call during the induction service for Lay Chairmen from the Northern Sector of the Methodist Church Ghana, representing the Kumasi, Sunyani, Tamale, Effiduase, and Kumasi North Dioceses.
Preaching on the theme “Called to Minister in a Period of Uncertainties” with scripture reference from Habakkuk 2:1–4, The Most Rev. Prof. Asante emphasized that teamwork between the clergy and the laity remains a vital pillar of the Methodist Connexional system.
He reminded the newly inducted Lay Chairmen that they were not merely chosen by chance but were elected by their Synods and appointed by the Conference to assist their respective Diocesan Bishops in leadership and to faithfully carry out every assigned responsibility.
The Most Rev. Prof. Asante further encouraged them to embrace pastoral leadership, serving as shepherds who inspire and guide the flock entrusted to their care. He cautioned that God detests sin and will never overlook wrongdoing, stressing that divine justice always prevails in the end.
He urged the Lay Chairmen to trust in God even in times of uncertainty, saying, “Do not give up when things seem unclear; hold firmly to your faith, for God knows what He is doing and never makes mistakes.”
The Immediate Past Bishop also highlighted the importance of motivating believers to live in complete obedience to God, to focus on His promises rather than their challenges, and to conquer their fears through unwavering faith.
The Most Rev. Prof. Asante tasked the Lay Chairmen to be sources of hope for the youth, to support the Bishops in addressing their challenges, to strengthen pastoral ministry, and to assist in expanding the Church’s mission and evangelistic outreach in collaboration with ordained ministers.
