Modric to leave Real Madrid for AC Milan after summer move confirmed

Real Madrid legend Luka Modric is nearing the end of a historic chapter at the Santiago Bernabéu, with Wednesday night’s Club World Cup semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain likely to be either his final or penultimate match for the Spanish giants.

The 39-year-old Croatian, widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in Real Madrid’s history, was given an emotional farewell in May during the club’s final home game of the season — a moment shared with manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Modric, who remained a crucial figure in the squad until his final two seasons, has now confirmed his next destination: Serie A side AC Milan. He is set to sign a one-year deal with the option to extend for another season.

AC Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri has officially announced the veteran midfielder’s imminent arrival.

“We’re waiting for Luka Modric. He’ll arrive in August. He’s an important, extraordinary player. He needs no introduction,” Allegri told Marca, during his second presentation as Milan manager.

Modric’s contract with Real Madrid was extended to cover the duration of the Club World Cup, after which he will become a free agent.

Allegri also revealed how Modric will fit into the Milan midfield setup, naming Ricci, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Bondo, and Musah as key players. “We’ll play with three midfielders, and we’ll adapt based on their characteristics,” he explained.

A Gap to Fill at Madrid

Modric’s departure, along with the earlier retirement of Toni Kroos, leaves a noticeable void in Real Madrid’s midfield. While the unit has shown signs of early promise under new manager Xabi Alonso, there is growing speculation that another signing may be necessary.

Alonso himself has acknowledged the need for a new type of midfielder to match the team’s evolving structure — a sentiment that has only grown stronger with Modric’s expected exit.
