The Methodist Church Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of young lives during the national military recruitment exercises held at the El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra and the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on November 12, 2025.
In a statement signed by the Presiding Bishop, Most Rev’d Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah Gyadu, the Church described the incidents as a profound national tragedy that demands urgent reflection and action.
According to the statement, the Church is not only heartbroken by the deaths recorded at El Wak but also by the injuries sustained by several applicants in Kumasi during a similar exercise.
The Church extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and offered prayers for the recovery of all those injured. Citing Psalm 34:18 “The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” the Methodist Church encouraged affected families to find strength in God’s everlasting comfort.
The Church emphasized that the twin incidents, occurring on the same day in two major cities, highlight the urgent need for improved crowd control mechanisms and safety protocols during large scale national events.
It therefore called on the military authorities and all relevant state institutions to launch a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to the tragedies.
The statement stressed the necessity for immediate reforms to ensure the dignity and safety of citizens, particularly young people seeking national opportunities.
Standing in solidarity with the nation, the Methodist Church entrusted the departed souls into God’s hands, praying that they find eternal peace in His mercy.
The Presiding Bishop reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to supporting the nation in mourning and healing, noting that such painful moments should prompt renewed dedication to safeguarding lives during national activities.
The statement concludes with a strong reminder from Romans 8:37 “In all these things we are more than conquerors.”
