Methodist Church Ghana celebrates 190th anniversary with public lecture

A major milestone in Ghana’s religious and social history was marked as the Methodist Church Ghana celebrated its 190th anniversary with a thought-provoking public lecture by its Presiding Bishop, The Most Rev. Prof. Johnson Kwabena Asamoah Gyadu.

Held at Wesley Towers in Accra, the event gathered faith leaders, intellectuals, and members of the public to reflect on the church’s legacy and its evolving role in global Christianity.

Centered on the theme “To Spread Through All The Earth Abroad: An African Perspective on Methodism and World Christianity in the 21st Century,” the lecture explored how the Methodist movement has grown far beyond its origins, with African communities now at the forefront of its global relevance.

Presiding Bishop Prof. Asamoah-Gyadu highlighted the critical contributions of both laypersons and ministers in sustaining and expanding the church’s mission across Ghana and internationally.

He specifically acknowledged the Ghanaian Methodist diaspora in the United Kingdom for playing a vital role in revitalizing Methodism in the land where it was born.

Reflecting on the foundation laid by John and Charles Wesley, the Presiding Bishop emphasized that Methodism was conceived not as a new denomination, but as a spiritual movement rooted in the practical demonstration of scriptural truth. “It is about lived holiness, justice, and righteousness,” he noted, calling for a return to core values such as revival, renewal, and deep personal faith.

Beyond spiritual work, the Church’s tangible impact on society was a focal point. From building schools and hospitals to operating orphanages and caring for vulnerable populations, the Methodist Church Ghana remains a key institution in national development. Its members continue to serve in influential roles across public service, academia, and civil society.

While celebrating the Church’s achievements, the Presiding Bishop, Prof. Asamoah Gyadu also addressed present-day challenges.

He warned against the growing trend to strip faith from public life and reduce the authority of scripture.

In response, he urged Methodists to seek spiritual awakening and remain steadfast in their commitment to truth and transformation.

The public lecture served as both a celebration of the past and a strategic vision for the future.

As the Methodist Church Ghana approaches its bicentennial, its mission remains clear: to preach the gospel, serve humanity, and lead with integrity in a rapidly changing world.
