The Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer, Memphis Depay, will join the national team later than expected for their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, following an unexpected passport issue.
Head coach Ronald Koeman confirmed that the 31-year-old forward, who currently plays for Corinthians in Brazil, is awaiting replacement travel documents after reporting that his passport had been stolen. The delay means Depay will miss the initial stages of the team’s preparations ahead of crucial qualifiers.
“This is unfortunate, primarily for Memphis, but also for us,” Koeman told reporters. “You always want to begin your international preparations with a full squad. However, there are situations that are simply beyond our control. We hope he can travel and join the team at the training camp as soon as possible.”
The Dutch national team face Malta on Thursday before returning home to host Finland on Sunday. The Netherlands currently sit level on 10 points with Poland in Group G, though Koeman’s side has played one match fewer.
Depay, a vital figure in the Dutch attack and their record goalscorer, is expected to rejoin the squad once his documentation is resolved. Despite the minor setback, team officials remain optimistic that he will be available for at least one of the two upcoming fixtures.
