Man jailed 5 years for stealing ECG equipment in Accra

An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced Asimah Delali, a rubbish collector, to five years in prison for stealing electrical infrastructure belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Delali, also known as “Ayigbe,” pleaded guilty to charges of interfering with the supplier distribution system and stealing. The presiding judge, Samuel Bright Acquah, emphasized that this was Delali’s third conviction for a similar offence and imposed an enhanced custodial sentence.

The court was informed that on June 8, 2025, Delali unlawfully accessed the premises of Africa Trade House in Accra and stole an Electrical Distribution Pillar door valued at GH¢5,000, along with an Electrical Termination Cover. The theft disrupted power supply in parts of the surrounding area.

Prosecutor Ama Frema Asante told the court that Delali had no fixed place of residence and had previously served 12-month and 6-month sentences for related offences.

According to the prosecution, Delali was apprehended by Winfred Wayem, Head of Security at Africa Trade House, with assistance from others. He was found with the stolen items in his possession and handed over to the police.

During interrogation in the presence of an independent witness, Delali confessed to the crime, stating that he crawled into the facility’s garden area to access and remove the electrical components.

The judge noted the premeditated nature of the act and its consequences on public utilities, stressing the importance of protecting national infrastructure. He concluded that the repeat nature of the offence warranted a stiffer sentence to deter similar conduct in the future.
