The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has directed all foreign nationals engaged in retail trading within the metropolis to voluntarily exit the retail space by December 9, 2025.
According to the Assembly, the directive aims to restore order, ensure compliance with Ghana’s trade regulations, and maintain stability in local markets. Officials emphasised that the move is intended to avoid any forceful removal during coordinated operations involving security agencies, KMA, and the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA).
The announcement follows a closed-door meeting between KMA management and GUTA leadership, where concerns about foreign participation in retail trade were discussed.
In a press statement, Mayor Richard Ofori-Agyemang Boadi acknowledged the issues raised by GUTA and reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to addressing the matter within the law. He also called on GUTA to halt ongoing actions of locking shops owned by foreign retailers, pending the coordinated process.
To oversee the implementation of the directive, a committee has been established comprising representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service, Customs Excise and Preventive Service, Ghana Police Service, KMA, Ghana Investment Promotion Council, and GUTA. The committee will ensure a lawful and orderly approach to the exit of foreign retail traders.
