Ken Ofori-Atta Released from U.S. ICE Custody, Returns Home

Legal representatives for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta have confirmed his release from custody by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a judicial order issued on April 7, 2026.

In a statement released by law firm Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, the legal team disclosed that Mr. Ofori-Atta has since returned home and reunited with his family.

“On April 7, 2026, Ken Ofori-Atta was released from ICE detention pursuant to a judicial order. He is now home with his family,” the statement said.

Commitment to legal process

According to his lawyers, the former minister remains committed to defending himself through lawful means under the U.S. legal system.

They emphasised that he will continue to rely on due process as guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States.

His family also expressed appreciation to supporters for their prayers and encouragement during his period in detention.

Background to investigations

Mr. Ofori-Atta, who served under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from 2017 to early 2024, has been under investigation over decisions taken during his time in office.

In June 2025, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, led by Kissi Agyebeng, initiated steps to issue an INTERPOL Red Notice after he failed to respond to multiple invitations for questioning.

The move was intended to facilitate his possible arrest and extradition.

Red Notice withdrawn

However, the Red Notice has since been withdrawn, meaning Mr. Ofori-Atta is no longer listed in INTERPOL’s database, and member countries are no longer required to act on the alert.

His release from ICE custody marks a new development in the ongoing legal and investigative processes surrounding the former finance minister.
