The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that the Ministry has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to popular American streamer and internet personality IShowSpeed, following confirmation of what the Minister described as the influencer’s “irrefutable ties” to Ghana.
In a statement on Tuesday, January 27, Mr. Ablakwa said the decision was reached after discussions that established IShowSpeed’s connection to the country. He noted that the move reflects Ghana’s continued openness to embracing members of the global African family who positively project the nation on the world stage.
“I am pleased to inform you and our compatriots that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved the issuance of a Ghanaian passport to IShowSpeed,” the Minister stated. He encouraged the influencer to continue promoting Ghana and Africa globally, describing him as a worthy ambassador whose impact resonates beyond entertainment.
Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa also acknowledged others who have similarly represented Ghana positively, noting that diplomatic passports had been granted last year to individuals he described as ambassadors of Ghana and the African continent.
The approval follows IShowSpeed’s high-octane “Speed Does Africa” tour, which culminated in a massive homecoming in Ghana on Monday, January 26. During the visit, the streamer immersed himself in Ghanaian culture and heritage, drawing huge crowds and global attention.
A highlight of the trip was a traditional enstoolment ceremony at Akropong, where IShowSpeed received the name Barima Kofi Akuffo during a spiritual naming ceremony. His itinerary also included visits to cultural and historic landmarks such as Asenema Waterfalls and the palace at Akropong-Akuapem.
In Accra, IShowSpeed showcased his flair for entertainment at Black Star Square with a supercar drifting session and a jollof rice tasting, before touring the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.
The Minister emphasized that the passport approval is both a recognition of IShowSpeed’s heritage and a celebration of Ghana’s commitment to engaging the global African diaspora.
