“If the Anti-LGBTQ Bill Is not passed, I won’t return to Parliament” — Ho West MP Emmanuel Bedzrah declares

Member of Parliament for Ho West, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, has boldly declared that he will not seek re-election if the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill — popularly known as the anti-LGBTQ bill — is not passed and assented to.

Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Wednesday, the MP stated that his decision stems from principle and moral conviction, not politics.

“If it’s not assented to, I will not come back to Parliament again,” he said. “I’ve told my colleagues and everyone that if it’s not passed and assented to, I’ll not return. What do I come to do if I have no moral principle to my generations unborn?”

Mr. Bedzrah, one of the eight sponsors of the bill, emphasized that his parliamentary career is deeply rooted in his commitment to defending Ghana’s traditional and moral values.

“Some of us did not enter Parliament just to do politics,” he explained. “We came to uphold principles — for the forward movement and moral advancement of this country.”

He also accused Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin of being “untruthful” regarding claims that he previously attempted to amend the bill. According to Bedzrah, at no point did Afenyo-Markin or anyone from his office reach out to the sponsors to discuss amendments.

“He has never come to us to propose any change or amendment,” Bedzrah asserted. “It’s surprising that the same person now advocates for the bill in Parliament — what kind of double tongue is this?”

The Ho West MP revealed that the bill’s sponsors — including Ntim Fordjour and Sam George — regularly meet to coordinate strategies for advancing the legislation, insisting that the process has been transparent and united.

For Bedzrah, the issue transcends political divisions. His stance is clear: if the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill fails to receive presidential assent, his 16-year parliamentary career will come to an end — a move he describes as a matter of moral duty, not political choice.
