I chose politics to change lives, not to get rich

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed that his entry into politics was never motivated by personal gain, but by a deep-seated desire to transform lives and promote national development through innovation and integrity.

Speaking during his campaign tour of Amenfi West, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that leadership must be about service, not self-enrichment. He said the ultimate reward for public service lies in the impact made on people’s lives, not in the accumulation of wealth.

“I am in politics to change lives, not to chase wealth. I am not in politics because of money,” Dr. Bawumia declared to cheering supporters.

He explained that throughout his political journey, his guiding principle has been honesty, efficiency, and the judicious use of national resources for the common good.

Citing his record as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia referenced the Mobile Money Interoperability Project, describing it as a shining example of prudent governance. He revealed that the initiative was successfully executed at a cost of $4.5 million, compared to the $1.2 billion initially proposed under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration — a decision he said saved the nation over $1.1 billion.

“If I were in politics for money, I would have taken advantage of that. All this money saved would have become debt for Ghanaians to pay,” he noted. “I am not in politics to gain, but to transform lives — and that is exactly what I’m doing.”

Dr. Bawumia further urged NPP delegates to rally behind his 2028 leadership bid, assuring them that his administration would continue to prioritize policies that improve livelihoods, create jobs, and ensure value for money in governance.

He added that his campaign is built on transparency, innovation, and service — values he believes Ghana urgently needs to sustain its development agenda.

“Politics must be about people, not profit. That is the message I have carried throughout my public life, and that is what I stand for,” he concluded.
