Gov’t declares three days of national mourning in honour of former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings

The Government of Ghana has declared a three-day national mourning period to pay tribute to the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement on Friday, stating that the observance will take place from Friday, October 24, to Sunday, October 26, 2025.

In a statement issued on behalf of the government, President Mahama directed that all national flags be flown at half-mast across public buildings, government establishments, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad in remembrance of the late former First Lady.

“This decision reflects our collective respect for her legacy and her outstanding contribution to Ghana’s growth and development,” the statement noted.

Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, who served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001, was a formidable advocate for women’s rights, social justice, and community development. Through the 31st December Women’s Movement, she championed causes that improved education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for women and children across the country.

Her tireless activism and influence left an indelible mark on national policy, particularly in advancing women’s empowerment and participation in leadership during Ghana’s evolving democratic journey.

The government described her as “a visionary leader whose efforts remain deeply interwoven with the country’s social transformation,” emphasizing her role in shaping modern Ghanaian society.

Extending sympathy to the bereaved family, the statement conveyed the government’s heartfelt condolences to the Rawlings family, especially her children, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and all Ghanaians grieving her passing.

“The Government of Ghana expresses its profound sorrow at the loss of a remarkable woman whose dedication to national progress will never be forgotten. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” it concluded.

The family, in collaboration with the state, is expected to announce details of her funeral arrangements in the coming days.
